History of Parish
The Good shepherd chaplaincy was founded in 1993 as a result of the movement of the Kogi State Polytechnic from its temporary site at the Government Science Secondary School, Lokoja to its permanent location at Felele.
Some Catholic staff members and students came together and decided to worship in one of the large halls. This decision was communicated to His Lordship, Late Bishop Joseph Sunday Ajomo who directed that the cathedral Administrator should make the necessary arrangements. Rev. Fr. Jerome 'Tunji Akinyemi celebrated the first Mass in the Polytechnic Campus in Hall P.. This hall was also used by some other Christian denominations. There were clashes among the various denominations. In order to avoid these clashes the Catholic worshipping Community approached the Polytechnic authority for a parcel of land to build our own church. This idea was reported to the late Bishop, His Lordship Bishop Joseph Sunday Ajomo. He gave his blessing and advised that we would use the building plan of the Chapel at St Clement Seminary.
After the parcel of land was allocated to the Catholic worshipping community, the Bishop, late Bishop Joseph Sunday Ajomo gave the building plan to his builder to lay the foundation with Rev. Fr. Francis Okudaje in January 2003.
With the proceeds from the fund raising organised by the Catholic worshipping community of the Polytechnic, together with the money contributed by some catholic members of staff and donation of N500,000.00 from the Bishop, the building was raised up to roofing level and finally roofed by money realised during our thanksgiving and Harvest that year.
With the assistance from the Propagation of Faith, we have been able to have a functional church. We also get occasional small donation from the Polytechnic for the development of the church.
The chaplaincy was an outstation of St. Matthew's Catholic Parish, Felele until 1st February, 2010 when it became a full-fledged chaplaincy granted by Bishop Martin Dada Abejide Olorunmolu. Rev. Fr. Cyril Ayobode Fanaiye was named the first Chaplain, the position he holds till date
